Redemption of the Firstborn

⁴⁰And the Lord said to Moses, “List all the firstborn males of the people of Israel, from a month old and upward, taking the number of their names. ⁴¹^(A)And you shall take the Levites for me—I am the Lord—instead of all the firstborn among the people of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the people of Israel.” ⁴²So Moses listed all the firstborn among the people of Israel, as the Lord commanded him. ⁴³And all the firstborn males, according to the number of names, from a month old and upward as listed were 22,273.

⁴⁴And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ⁴⁵^(B)“Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the people of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle. The Levites shall be mine: I am the Lord. ⁴⁶And ^(C)as the redemption price for the 273 of the firstborn of the people of Israel, over and above the number of the male Levites, ⁴⁷you shall take ^(D)five shekels^[a] per head; you shall take them according to ^(E)the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel of twenty gerahs^[b]), ⁴⁸and give the money to Aaron and his sons as the redemption price for those who are over.” ⁴⁹So Moses took the redemption money from those who were over and above those redeemed by the Levites. ⁵⁰From the firstborn of the people of Israel he took the money, ^(F)1,365 shekels, by the shekel of the sanctuary. ⁵¹And Moses ^(G)gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

These were the descendants of Jerahmeel. ³⁴Now Sheshan had no sons, only daughters, but Sheshan had an Egyptian slave whose name was Jarha. ³⁵So Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to Jarha his slave, and she bore him Attai. ³⁶Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered ^(A)Zabad. ³⁷^(B)Zabad fathered Ephlal, and Ephlal fathered ^(C)Obed. ³⁸Obed fathered Jehu, and Jehu fathered Azariah. ³⁹Azariah fathered Helez, and Helez fathered Eleasah. ⁴⁰Eleasah fathered Sismai, and Sismai fathered Shallum. ⁴¹Shallum fathered Jekamiah, and Jekamiah fathered ^(D)Elishama.

The son^[b] of Mareshah: ^(F)Hebron.^[c] ⁴³The sons of Hebron: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema. ⁴⁴Shema fathered Raham, the father of Jorkeam; and Rekem fathered Shammai. ⁴⁵The son of Shammai: Maon; and Maon fathered Beth-zur. ⁴⁶Ephah also, Caleb's concubine, bore Haran, Moza, and Gazez; and Haran fathered Gazez. ⁴⁷The sons of Jahdai: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph. ⁴⁸Maacah, Caleb's concubine, bore Sheber and Tirhanah. ⁴⁹She also bore Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah and the father of Gibea; and the ^(G)daughter of Caleb was Achsah. ⁵⁰These were the descendants of Caleb.

The sons^[d] of Hur the firstborn of ^(H)Ephrathah: Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim, ⁵¹^(I)Salma, the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph the father of Beth-gader. ⁵²Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim had other sons: ^(J)Haroeh, half of the Menuhoth. ⁵³And the clans of Kiriath-jearim: the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites; from these came the ^(K)Zorathites and the Eshtaolites. ⁵⁴The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites. ⁵⁵The clans also of the scribes who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, the Shimeathites and the Sucathites. These are the ^(L)Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of ^(M)the house of Rechab.

A Lament over the King of Tyre

¹¹Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: ¹²^(A)“Son of man, ^(B)raise a lamentation over ^(C)the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,^[a]
    ^(D)full of wisdom and ^(E)perfect in beauty.
¹³You were in ^(F)Eden, the garden of God;
    ^(G)every precious stone was your covering,
^(H)sardius, topaz, and diamond,
    beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,^[b] ^(I)emerald, and carbuncle;
    and crafted in gold were your settings
    and your engravings.^[c]
^(J)On the day that you were created
    they were prepared.
¹⁴You were an anointed ^(K)guardian cherub.
    I placed you;^[d] you were on ^(L)the holy mountain of God;
    in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
¹⁵You were blameless in your ways
    ^(M)from the day you were created,
    till unrighteousness was found in you.

    you profaned your sanctuaries;
so ^(S)I brought fire out from your midst;
    it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth

    are appalled at you;

    and shall be no more forever.”

Prophecy Against Sidon

²⁰The word of the Lord came to me: ²¹^(V)“Son of man, ^(W)set your face toward ^(X)Sidon, and ^(Y)prophesy against her ²²and say, Thus says the Lord God:

“Behold, ^(Z)I am against you, O Sidon,
    and ^(AA)I will manifest my glory in your midst.
And ^(AB)they shall know that I am the Lord
    ^(AC)when I execute judgments in her
    and ^(AD)manifest my holiness in her;
²³for I will send ^(AE)pestilence into her,
    and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
    by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

²⁴“And for the house of Israel ^(AF)there shall be no more a brier to prick or ^(AG)a thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors ^(AH)who have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Israel Gathered in Security

²⁵“Thus says the Lord God: ^(AI)When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and ^(AJ)manifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, ^(AK)then they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. ²⁶^(AL)And they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, ^(AM)when I execute judgments upon all their neighbors ^(AN)who have treated them with contempt. ^(AO)Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”

²⁵Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, ²⁶^(A)“If anyone comes to me and ^(B)does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, ^(C)yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. ²⁷^(D)Whoever does not ^(E)bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. ²⁸For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not ^(F)first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? ²⁹Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, ³⁰saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ ³¹Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not ^(G)sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? ³²And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. ³³^(H)So therefore, any one of you who ^(I)does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

Salt Without Taste Is Worthless

³⁴^(J)“Salt is good, ^(K)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? ³⁵It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. ^(L)He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Keep in Step with the Spirit

¹⁶But I say, ^(A)walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify ^(B)the desires of the flesh. ¹⁷For ^(C)the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, ^(D)to keep you from doing the things you want to do. ¹⁸But if you are ^(E)led by the Spirit, ^(F)you are not under the law. ¹⁹Now ^(G)the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, ²⁰idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, ^(H)divisions, ²¹envy,^[a] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that ^(I)those who do^[b] such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. ²²But ^(J)the fruit of the Spirit is ^(K)love, joy, peace, patience, ^(L)kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³^(M)gentleness, ^(N)self-control; ^(O)against such things there is no law. ²⁴And those who belong to Christ Jesus ^(P)have crucified the flesh with its ^(Q)passions and desires.

²⁵If we live by the Spirit, ^(R)let us also keep in step with the Spirit. ²⁶^(S)Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
